Halls, holiday houses, parks, boats and function rooms all handle glass differently, and the details usually turn up after the deposit is paid. Glass turns out to be banned by the pool, the cupboard holds thirty odd tumblers, there is a glass fee per head, or the bond depends on you washing everything before you leave. These nine questions sort that out in one email.
The nine questions
Is glass allowed?
- Is glass allowed at the venue at all?Some parks, beaches, pools, boats and halls do not allow glass. Better to know now than to find a sign on the day.
- Are there areas where it is not allowed?Pool decks, lawns, dance floors and balconies often have their own rules. It changes where the bar and the drinks table can go.
What is supplied?
- What glassware do you supply, and how many of each?Get numbers, not "we have glasses". Forty tumblers is not enough glasses for forty people.
- What condition is it in, and does it all match?Ask for a photo. A cupboard of mismatched tumblers and a few odd wine glasses is common in halls and holiday rentals.
Hidden costs
- Is there a charge for using your glasses, or a corkage fee?Some venues charge per glass or per head for glassware, or a corkage fee if you bring your own drinks.
- Is there a cleaning fee, and what counts as clean?Ask what you have to do before you leave to avoid it, and get the answer in writing.
The washing up
- Who washes the glasses, and is there a dishwasher we can use?If it is you, find out whether there is a commercial dishwasher or just a sink, and what happens to your bond if the glasses are not done.
Getting glasses in and out
- When can deliveries arrive, and when must everything be gone?Delivery and collection times decide whether you can have things dropped off the day before and picked up after.
- Where do we unload, and where can crates sit out of the way?Ask about parking, stairs and lifts, and for a dry corner or a storeroom for the crates during the event.

By kind of venue
- Community halls: usually hired bare. Expect no glassware, a basic kitchen and a cleaning bond. Our suburb pages list local halls with links to book them.
- Holiday houses: check the house rules for parties and breakages. Six wine glasses and a dishwasher that holds twelve do not stretch to a party.
- Parks and beaches: check the council's rules for that reserve. Some do not allow glass at all.
- Boats: many charter boats restrict glass on deck. Ask what they supply.
- Function rooms and restaurants: glassware is usually included, but ask about corkage and whether you can bring your own for something special, like coupes for a toast.
If the answers are not good
If glass is not allowed, respect it. Nobody wants a party cut short over a broken glass by the pool.
If glass is fine but what they supply is not, or the washing up is on you, that is what we are for.
